HANDLING AND MAINTENANCE - WOOD DOORS

HANDLING AND MAINTENANCE

To assist you in protecting your investment, please read and follow all the instructions below. Failure to do so could result in possible damage to your new door and certain void of our limited warranty (click here to review Limited Warranty in detail).

Before you order your door

Remember to always check your local building codes and regulations prior to ordering. To adequately protect your door and extend its life, you should consider the direction your door will be facing and the amount of overhang covering it. Without an adequate overhang hardwood doors with western or southern exposures will require more frequent maintenance. Ideally, the wood door must not receive more then four hours of direct sunlight daily.

Wood doors with larger panels are more adversely affected by direct sunlight than those with smaller panels. Doors with wide panels require 100% protection from the sun. If your entryway receives any direct sunlight, select a door with smaller panels.

Doors should not be installed where there is insufficient overhang or where there is excessive exposure to direct rain/snow and/or southern/western exposure, which allows direct sunlight to hit door. If the opening where the door is to be installed has shorter than the required overhang, any problems with the door will not be covered by our warranty. This represents the most common situation.  It is critical to determine if your door has the required overhang.  Please measure up from the bottom of the door to the point where the overhang meets the wall and divide that distance by two. The resulting number will be the minimum allowable overhang for doors not containing wide panels. Example: if you measure 10 feet from the bottom of the door to the overhang, you will need a minimum of 5 feet of overhang. If you have a western or southern exposure, you may still receive direct sunlight on the doors. In such cases, the required overhang projection is 2/3-rds of its height. Example: if the height of overhang is 12 feet, projection of overhang must be a minimum of 8 feet.

When your door arrives

Immediately upon receipt of your doors, inspect them for warp, broken glass, damaged moldings or any other manufacturing defect or freight damage. In case of freight damage, it is your responsibility to refuse the shipment or to file a claim with the freight company at once. Photographs of the damaged freight are always a good idea to ensure a proper claim. Do not hang or finish a defective door, if you plan to return it.

Storage and Handling of your doors

Doors should be stored flat on a level surface. However, if this is not possible, they may be stored for a short time on their side - supported by at least two vertical supports. Never store your doors standing on one end or leaning against a wall.

Doors should not be exposed to excessive heat, dryness, humidity or direct sunlight prior to finishing. As the mahogany ages its color darkens. Direct sunlight speeds up this process. The lighter area may be caused when a piece of casing or other materials or objects are accidentally left lying across an exposed door and is very difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Handle doors with clean hands or gloves and do not drag them across one another. Make sure that everyone involved with your doors read and understand this information, and remember that most problems with doors are due to improper handling, installation and/or finishing.

WOOD DOOR MAINTENANCE

You may be required to perform periodic maintenance. Such maintenance is necessary and is not part of our limited warranty. Such maintenance may include, among other items, maintaining the exterior finish. Required maintenance may vary depending upon frequency of usage, environmental conditions in your area and other factors. Factory and non-factory finishes must be maintained to remain under warranty. If the finish is not maintained, it will begin to fail, and your door may require a complete refinishing. Failure to maintain the finish will void the warranty.

While the finish on our wood doors is the finest available, periodic maintenance is required to optimize the life span and appeal of your door. Finish life varies, and may be affected by the amount of moisture, sunlight exposure and accumulation of dust or exterior elements will affect the finish. For homes with entries protected from sun and moisture, finishes may last many years, but in severe weather exposure, finish life without maintenance may be much shorter. You can determine if the finish needs restoration by visual inspection. Evidence of dulling, a so called dry feeling, unnaturally raised grain and minor surface checks are all signs that a finish restoration is needed. A shade of white surface cast to the final finish, particularly on doors subject to sun and moisture, is also a sign for finish restoration. Also, dark streaks starting at the bottom of the panels are a sign that moisture is being drawn up into the wood. Inspect your doors for any of these conditions regularly or at least once a year. If they should appear, it is important to restore the finish without delay.

To properly restore the finish, please follow these steps carefully:

         a. Lightly sand and wipe away dust with a clean cloth, slightly dampened with mineral spirits.

         b. Apply at least two coats of fade-resistant exterior polyurethane with an ultraviolet
             inhibitor. Sand lightly between coats.

         c. Finish all sides of the door.
