HANDLING AND MAINTENANCE of WOOD ENTRY DOORS

Below are instructions to care for and maintain your door for optimal, long-term performance. Failure to follow these instructions could cause premature damage and void the limited warranty. If you have any questions, please contact Glenview Doors Inc. for clarity.

ADLER MAINTENANCE KIT

ADLER Care Set The most important step to maintain your door is to use the ADLER Care Kit which is sold through any Glenview Doors Dealer. The kit includes a gentle door cleanser, Adler conditioning treatment, and lint-free cloths for application. It's a simple wipe-on formula, which means there is no sanding or refinishing required. Each kit should contain enough product for about 2 applications. It has the following benefits:

Fills in micro-tears in the finish
Adds UV protection to prevent discoloration, fading, and damage to the finish
Forms a protective film against dirt and impurities
Prolongs the life of your finish so you don't have to refinish your door
Refreshes the surface to keep it beautiful
Creates a silky gloss

INSTRUCTIONS

Cleansing: mix the cleanser with a little warm water and dampen a lint-free cloth with the solution. Gently scrub the exterior surface of the door to remove any dirt that could prevent the conditioning treatment from adhering. Dry the surface once it is clean, don't let water sit in any corners or crevices.

Conditioning: Once the door is clean and dry, you can apply the conditioning treatment. You can either spray it on the door directly, or dampen a lint-free cloth and wipe it on. Wait 10 minutes and then wipe away any excess treatment which hasn't been absorbed. Wait one hour and then repeat this step to apply another layer.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The ADLER care kit is made by the same company that formulated the 2K finish that every Glenview Door is equipped with, offering superior protection compared to other products on the market. Other conditioning treatments could also damage the 2K finish, require more frequent applications, and void the warranty.
You should apply the ADLER conditioning treatment NO LESS than once a year, and NO MORE than twice per year. Applying too frequently could create a milky film on the door, not applying often enough would leave the finish vulnerable to UV and water damage.
The finish on all Glenview Doors has UV protectant built in, so you won't need to begin applications until at least 6 months after the door has been installed.
The conditioning treatment only needs to be applied on the exterior side of the door unless you have a unique situation where the interior side of your door receives 4+ hours of direct sunlight per day.
Only clean and condition the wood parts of the door, the conditioning treatment has no benefit on metal or glass surfaces.
Use a lint-free cloth to prevent adding material to the surface.
The conditioning process should only be done if weather conditions are dry and over 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
The finish should last 10-15 years if it is maintained with the ADLER care set.
We do not recommend applying top coat pre-emptively to protect the door because it could damage the 2K finish and require annual touchups.

INSPECTING THE DOOR

You should inspect the door seasonally for signs of damage. Look for the following:

Dulling
A dry feeling
Raised grain
Minor surface checks
A white cast on the surface of the finish
Scratches or abrasions

If you notice any of these issues, apply the ADLER conditioning treatment with UV protectant immediately. If the problem is not resolved, then the door needs to be refinished.

Dark streaks from the bottom of the door or frame indicate that the finish on the bottom of the door is compromised and moisture is being drawn up into the wood. The unit needs to be resealed immediately. You can purchase a quart of top coat through any Glenview Doors Dealer.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS FOR YOUR DOOR

SUNLIGHT: Many people assume that cold, wet weather is the most punishing for doors. Rain and snow can cause some damage, but as long as the finish is intact, it shouldn't be significantly harmful. Sunlight can eat away at the finish and leave your door vulnerable, which is why it is the biggest threat to doors. Once the finish is compromised, the door will become exposed to water damage from rain and snow. Protecting the finish by avoiding sun damage, is the best way to increase the longevity of a door. A wood door with Euro Technology should not receive more then four hours of direct sunlight daily. The direction your door faces determines how much sun protection you will need. Below are some notes to help determine the direction your door faces and how to protect it.

WEST FACING: The sun sets in the west, which means the door would be getting sunlight later in the day. This is the most punishing direction for a door because the sun ends up being perpendicular to your door when it sets, meaning even a large overhang can't block all of the sunlight. Planting foliage in front of your door or adding a physical barrier like a fence, can offer alternative forms of protection, but you will probably need to apply a UV protectant regularly to avoid damage.
SOUTH FACING: Southward-facing doors will get sunlight most of the day. However, the sun stays higher than westward sun, so a large overhang should offer excellent protection. If you don't have an overhang, or it's very small, you will need to apply a conditioning treatment with UV protection frequently, particularly to the bottom of the door, which will be the area that gets the most sunlight.
EAST FACING: The sun rises in the east. You would think that eastward facing doors would have similar issues to West-facing because the sun ends up being perpendicular to the door when it's rising, but morning sunlight is much cooler than setting sunlight. East-facing doors still need regular UV protection, but much less frequently than south or west-facing doors. An overhang will also be helpful.
NORTH FACING: North-facing doors don't receive any direct sunlight and will require less frequent UV protection. Monitor the door for weathering and treat accordingly.

RAIN/SNOW As mentioned previously, rain and snow will not cause significant damage to the door if the finish is intact, but its best to avoid letting water sit on the door. Clear snow away from the threshold and wipe anything that settles on the sticking/molding or panels. Doors with flat ADA thresholds, like our pivot and outswing doors, are not equipped for wet environments. If you purchase a door with a flat ADA threshold, make sure you have a significant overhang and/or a good drainage system to prevent water from pooling at the base of the door. Driving rain (rain paired with wind that moves horizontally) during extreme weather conditions, can cause leaks regardless of the overhang and drainage system.

LOW HUMIDITY Arid climates are usually very damaging to wood doors. The Euro Technology offers significant protection against this and shouldn't cause any concern. Make sure to apply conditioning treatments regularly to seal any micro tears in the finish and keep it looking new.

REPLACING WEATHER STRIPPING

Our doors have two types of weather stripping. One is installed around the frame and the other is attached to the bottom of the slab. Both are replaceable and can be purchased at most hardware stores. Weather stripping doesn't need to be replaced unless it is torn or fraying and interfering with the function of the door. You can bring a photo or piece of the weather stripping to your local hardware store to find the proper replacement. It should be Qlon brand.

The frame weather stripping can be replaced without removing the door. Replacing the weather stripping under the door slab will require you to remove the door from the hinges.

ADJUSTING THE THRESHOLD

The top bar of the threshold is held in place with several screws which can be loosened or tightened to raise or lower the height. This adjusts the seal at the bottom of the door and should be reviewed seasonally.

MAHOGANY COLORATION

Mahogany darkens as it ages. Sunlight accelerates this process and UV protection delays it. If the sunlight is uneven on the door, the color will become uneven. This is generally not an issue once the door is installed because the sun patterns will be pretty consistent, but If you store the door somewhere for a long time and then move it, you might see abnormal patterns. For that reason, we always recommend storing the door out of direct sunlight before installation.
